Families in the Long Beach, CA, area can now enjoy an inclusive playground experience in Lincoln Park.

Part of the large-scale revitalization happening at the Long Beach Civic Center, the City wanted a play experience that was aesthetically beautiful, fun, inclusive, and accessible.

Completed in December of 2021, the “ocean-themed” playground project was designed by RecWest Outdoor Products & Landscape Structures, with overall park design by architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) and landscape architects GGN. The team selected SpectraTurf to provide all playground surfacing for this unique play experience because of our ability to install high quality graphic designs with intense colors.

Unique Project Features

The custom “ocean-themed” play experience features a one-of-a-kind “We-Go-Round” spinner, along with a number of climbers and slides linked together throughout the mound-filled play space. A custom “boardwalk climber” allows for children of all abilities to traverse play-mounds and access all the different play components.

The project was designed with multiple elevation changes and required extraordinary planning and communication among all contractors to make the finished product compliant and safe. It successfully meets all ADA requirements.

For this project, SpectraTurf used SpectraPour - Aliphatic, our flagship pour-in-place rubber playground surfacing.  SpectraPour has been used on thousands of projects throughout the US at parks, schools, daycare centers, and other applications requiring a high quality, poured rubber safety surface.

The pour-in-place installation and wide variety of colors allows us to create intricate and visually pleasing and inclusive designs. Its shock-absorbing qualities make it ideal for safety surfaces at critical fall heights as well as comfortable for any walking or standing application.
