Overview

Gallagher Square at Petco Park in San Diego, Calif. is located adjacent to Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres Major League Baseball team. To celebrate Petco Park’s 20th anniversary in 2024, the Padres renovated Gallagher Square to provide fans and the community with expanded amenities. This included the installation of a new playground surface: SpectraPour Supreme.

Key Challenges and Solutions

Gallagher Square is a grassy area of approximately 2.8 acres that is located outside of the outfield wall but still inside the Petco gates. What makes this park unique is that visitors don’t need a ticket to come to this area on game days. Likewise, anyone with a game ticket can also access this space. 

Because this park is so beloved and well used, it was renovated after the 2023 baseball season. Park improvements include a dog park, enhanced play ball field, temporary pickleball courts, public art displays that showcase local artists, Tony Gwynn terrace viewing deck and picnic space, and an upgraded, expanded playground and play area with equipment for a wider range of age groups and abilities.

Gallagher Square now features many fun amenities, including a mini little league infield diamond, trees, a statue of Padres great Tony Gwynn, a variety of climbing structures, slides, and plenty of space to play. SpectraPour Supreme was installed in varying thicknesses in the playground area, depending upon the fall height rating that was required. 

SpectraPour Supreme is the highest-quality safety surface on the market. This two-part system is mixed on-site and features high-density 0.5-1.5 mm colored granules in the top layer, complete with UV stable aliphatic binder, over a shock-absorbing rubber base pad. The result is a product that increases a surface's expected life while decreasing overall maintenance costs. SpectraPour Supreme also conforms to ADA requirements and is IPEMA Certified, making it extremely safe in the event a child falls, because it meets critical fall heights.

The graphics in this safety surface are very colorful and complement the baseball theme of the location and custom equipment.
